Tacklebox

We were recently asked to create an app icon for Tacklebox, a utility for developers working with Cloudflare servers.

Dark

Clear

After looking at my own cantilever toolbox from various angles, it was clear that a side view would make for the strongest silhouette. From this perspective, it was possible to depict the subject using very simple geometry, with the curves of the box nesting neatly within the corners of the app icon shape.

Although the creative brief specified that this was to be a single-color glyph, we couldn’t help but introduce some dimensionality. Instead of using negative space to indicate the pivot bars of the cantilever box, we drew them as discrete shapes layered on top of the trays, and set them in the same orange as the background. The internal components can also be seen through the translucent lid of the box.

The result is an icon that looks like a glyph at first glance, but with subtle Liquid Glass refractions and specular highlights that help clarify the relationship between each element.
